Course overview

This course is suitable for people with little or no prior knowledge in business management and leadership and who wish to gain general and specialised knowledge and skills in the area of leadership and management at an operation level within New Zealand business entities, or for further studies in the area of business management. This course is the perfect introduction to the world of business.

Course Description

This course consists of six papers and will be completed over two semesters. Students who enrol in these programmes with a student permit must be enrolled full time for three papers at a time. Students must pass four of the compulsory papers and two of the option papers to complete the course. Students may only reduce the number of papers if they are in the final semester of their programme and need fewer than three papers to complete the qualification.

Students on a Student Visa/Permit must meet attendance requirements as a condition of their permit. Failure to meet this requirement may place any further extension for study purposes in jeopardy.

Intensive programmes and Recovery programmes are offered concurrently with the usual semester.

* These papers are compulsory for NZ Dip Bus. Optional papers may also include one unspecified credit (if approved by NZIM)
** This option is only available for students that have completed the NZIM certificate in language, culture and management (CLCM)

Employment pathway

Graduates will have the skills and knowledge to work or gain employment as a manager/leader in roles at an operational level within New Zealand business entities. These roles may include:

  • Customer services manager
  • Office manager
  • Store manager/team leader
  • Operation manager.

Entry requirements

Students will need to have:

  • An English equivalent of academic IELTS 5.5 with no band less than 5.0; or equivalent as approved and set out in the NZQA Programme Approval and Accreditation Rules;
  • Completed at least a certificate in business level 3; or NZ year 12 Secondary Schooling or international quivalents; or have at least 2 years of relevant work experience.

Graduate profile

Students who successfully complete this Level 5 course will be able to:

  • Understand the wide range of leadership and management roles, skills and responsibilities with the organization.
  • Understand the concepts and ability to apply the problem solving and decision making strategy.
  • Apply the theory to the business situation.
  • Progresses into the NZDB level 6 studies.
